The Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk met with the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Fernando Arias.

The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament thanked Fernando Arias and the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for close and productive cooperation and assistance in obtaining the necessary equipment for Ukraine.

 "The issue of counteracting the use of chemical weapons in the context of a full-scale invasion of russia is now becoming as relevant as possible," Ruslan Stefanchuk noted. The Chairman assured that Ukraine remains a strong and steadfast supporter of the Convention and acts in strict compliance with all the requirements of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine said that a large number of Ukrainian specialists took part in trainings and exercises from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.  He also added that the competent authorities of Ukraine are currently considering an draft ad hoc agreement on the establishment of privileges and immunities between the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and Ukraine for a visit to provide technical assistance.

 "For Ukraine, the implementation of all provisions of the Agreement is one of the main tasks of state policy. This issue is under the constant control of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Government of Ukraine," Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed.

In particular, he noted that Ukraine, both under the Convention and in fact, has made a commitment and undertakes not to actually use any chemicals as a means of waging war.

 "After these 25 years, we can say that we – Europe, the Member States, the organization as a recognized authority – have affirmed the value that chemical weapons belong to other times, to the past, that chemical weapons cannot be used in today's world."

 "The Syrian war was really terrible, and now the Ukrainian war is definitely the next difficult thing for us," said Fernando Arias.

He also said that the construction of a new branch of the headquarters – the Chemistry Center, is underway, where there will be two important training places: For training of experts from Member States, yours and ours, training in the use of new equipment for testing and modeling of calls after an attack or incident.

 "At the same time, we will clearly respond and inform your Organization about all the results or suspicions of the use of such chemicals by russia," said the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
