On 19 February, the parliament of Latvia — the Saeima — adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of russia’s full-scale invasion.

"As promised during our meeting in Riga, Speaker of the Latvian Saeima Daiga Mieriņa, the Latvian Parliament has just adopted a special resolution supporting Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of its resistance to russia's full-scale invasion. We are grateful to the Saeima of Latvia and the entire Latvian society for their unwavering support of Ukraine!" said Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk, who is on a working visit to Riga.

In its resolution, the Latvian Parliament emphasizes, in particular:

Ukraine sincerely seeks to end hostilities and is actively participating in peace talks to reach a fair agreement. However, through disinformation, new unacceptable ultimatums, and intensified attacks on the Ukrainian civilian population and energy infrastructure, russia is sabotaging peace initiatives and is responsible for the continuation of the war.

Latvia will never recognize the incorporation into russia of Ukrainian territories that have been occupied by russia since 2014. The Parliament calls on the Latvian government and the international community to advocate for a peaceful solution based on the full restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity and to prevent the annexation and legalization of the occupation of Ukrainian territories.

Latvian MPs are calling for increased pressure on russia through comprehensive sanctions and the severing of all economic ties with it. The parliament also calls for targeted restrictive measures against countries that support russia, increased pressure on russia's shadow fleet, and against third-country companies that help russia carry out its aggression.

Parliament confirms that Latvia will continue to support Ukraine by allocating at least 0.25 percent of its GDP to military support. Latvia will continue to provide humanitarian aid to strengthen the resilience of Ukrainian society, promote the restoration of critical infrastructure, and rehabilitate war victims.

Parliamentarians welcome the EU's decision to freeze russian assets indefinitely and provide Ukraine with a loan of €90 billion to meet its immediate financial needs.

The Parliament calls for ensuring the full functioning of the Special Tribunal for the Investigation of Crimes of Aggression against Ukraine and the Compensation Mechanism, as well as expanding all forms of support for Ukraine, in particular through the use of frozen russian assets.

The Saeima deputies once again emphasize that Ukraine's future lies in the EU and NATO, and stress the need to immediately open EU negotiation clusters for Ukraine. Latvia, together with its allies and partners, will continue to provide political and practical support for Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration.
