During a working visit to Rome, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine thanked His Eminence for the Holy See’s consistent attention to Ukraine. He noted that recent high-level contacts once again confirm the significant role of the Holy See in international efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin emphasised that the Holy See hopes for the tragedy, which has lasted far too long, to end as soon as possible, and stressed that russia’s actions constitute a violation of international law.
Ruslan Stafanchuk expressed his gratitude for the constant prayers, support for humanitarian initiatives and concrete steps aimed at returning illegally deported Ukrainian children, as well as Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian hostages.
During the meenting, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine informed Cardinal Patrolin about ongoing diplomatic consultations between Ukraine, the USA and the European partners. He stressed that Ukraine's unwavering goal remains a just peace, rather than a temporary pause that would give russia an opportunity to regroup.
«The absence of any territorial concessions and the unacceptability of direct or indirect recognition of the temporarily occupied territories remain fundamental principles. A ceasefire regime is possible exclusively as part of a comprehensive solution, backed by reliable guarantees,» the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphasised.
The parties also discussed Europe’s role in the peace process. Ruslan Stefanchuk called for continued support for coordinated peace initiatives and the preservation of international unity.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada thanked His Eminence for his attention to Ukraine, moral support, and constructive dialogue, stressing that the path to a just peace is not easy; however, with the support of reliable partners, it becomes significantly closer.
