On 11 of December, the 14th Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Ukraine and the Republic of Poland took place in Lviv. Following the session, the co-chairs of the Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Olena Kondratiuk, and Vice-Marshal of the Polish Sejm, Monika Wielichowska, signed a Joint Declaration.

Ukrainian and Polish MPs, government officials from both countries took part in the session. The meeting focused on security in the region and joint efforts by the countries to support Ukraine's accession into the EU.

According to Olena Kondratiuk, the key points of the Declaration are that Poland supports the opening of negotiations for Ukraine's accession into the EU and creation of the Special Tribunal for russian crimes. It also notes the need to continue search and exhumation work and to combat the disinformation spread by russia with the aim of sowing distrust between Ukrainians and Poles.

«Today, we have reaffirmed our common position: no concessions to russian aggression, joint work to strengthen security in our region, and support for Ukraine's path to European integration. It is also important that Poland will host next year's annual conference on Ukraine's recovery (URC-2026), which opens up new opportunities for long-term joint projects,» said Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratiuk.

In turn, Deputy Marshal of the Polish Sejm Monika Wielichowska said: «Today’s meeting is an event that reminds us of solidarity, the strength of interparliamentary partnership and deep human ties between our nations in these particularly difficult times. Poland has been and will remain close to Ukraine for as long as necessary. Ukraine's future lies in the European family. We highly appreciate Ukraine's efforts towards European integration despite daily threats, pain and losses.»

She also noted that in addition to conventional weapons, the kremlin is now using means designed to sow chaos and incite hostility, employing a wide arsenal of disinformation tools.

«We must work together to combat the spread of harmful content,» Monika Wielichowska said.

In the adopted declaration, the MPs from Ukraine and Poland:

•         reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine's borders;

•         stressed the need to establish an international compensation mechanism using frozen russian assets;

•         supported the launch of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression;

•         called for the release of all civilian hostages, the exchange of prisoners of war, and the return of deported Ukrainians

•         emphasised Poland's unwavering support for Ukraine on its path to EU and NATO membership;

•         recognised the need to continue search and exhumation work in the two countries and to honour the victims in a dignified manner;

•         agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fight against russian propaganda, which seeks to sow distrust between Ukrainians and Poles.

«The session in Lviv demonstrated that Ukraine and Poland share a common vision of the future and are ready to coordinate their actions to strengthen regional security, European integration and the recovery of Ukraine,» concluded Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk.

The Parliamentary Assembly of Ukraine and Poland was established in 2003 to develop interparliamentary cooperation, coordinate positions and promote the common strategic interests of the two states. The previous session of the Assembly took place in autumn 2024 in Warsaw.
