The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk held a second meeting with representatives of the media community, human rights activists and lawyers to discuss proposals for the updated version of the Civil Code. The discussion focused on the provisions of the first and second books, in particular, on personal non-property rights, digital privacy, liability of online platforms, the right to reply and refutation.

The parties agreed on a number of wording and outlined a list of provisions that need to be finalised. The participants also reaffirmed the importance of finding balanced solutions between freedom of speech and the protection of citizens' dignity and privacy. "The effectiveness of this format is obvious - many positions have been rethought thanks to the professional discussion. We are moving towards common solutions while maintaining a balance in society," said Ruslan Stefanchuk, stressing the importance of an open dialogue with the professional community.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also said that the first drafts of the third book (property law) and the fourth (intellectual property law) have already been completed. They will be made public for public discussion in the near future. After that, work will continue on the books on family law, inheritance, private international law and openness of civil rights.

Next week, the second book of the Civil Code is scheduled to be submitted to the Parliament for consideration in the first reading. After that, the working group, together with experts, will finalise the agreed amendments.

The update of the Civil Code is ongoing in an open format and is intended to provide a modern, systematic and European model of private law for Ukraine.
