The Delegation of the Parliament of Ukraine, headed by the First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Korniienko, has concluded its participation in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Assembly's General Debate focused on the: “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice.”
The delegation included: Oleksandr Merezhko, Arsenii Pushkarenko, Olha Rudenko, Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, Oleksandr Sanchenko, Tamila Tasheva, and Ivan Krulko.
Members of the Ukrainian delegation addressed parliamentarians from around the world, clearly outlining Ukraine’s position on pressing national and international challenges. Key issues raised included the preservation of the cultural identity of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, as well as support for communities abroad. Special emphasis was placed on the issue of Crimea’s de-occupation.
The Ukrainian delegation raised the issue of russian terror against civilians, gross violations of international humanitarian law, and the impunity of the aggressor, calling on the world’s parliaments for immediate action in response to these atrocities.
Being in Tashkent the Ukrainian Parliament delegation held a meeting with First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sodik Safayev, during which they discussed the development of bilateral relations and interparliamentary cooperation.
According to the First Deputy Speaker, the working visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan also included a meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities.
With the head of the Turkish delegation, Asuman Erdogan, the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation discussed issues of Ukraine’s European integration, the de-occupation of Crimea, and the release of Crimean Tatars.
During the meeting with the Indonesian delegation the importance of continuing coworking for renovating Ukraine's medical infrastructure was highlighted.
The dialogue with the UAE's delegation drew attention to the preparation of a comprehensive partnership agreement between Ukraine and the UAE.
The address by Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, Chair of the Subcommittee on Anti-Corruption Policy in the Sphere of Digital Innovation and Public Data of the Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy, during the Assembly session, concerned the interaction between BRICS and the United Nations, as well as the impact of russia’s aggressive policy on global development.
Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi offered the topic for a new declaration of the UN Affairs Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, focusing on enhancing the capacity of parliaments to anticipate the future in the context of implementing the UN Pact for the Future.
Oleksandr Merezhko delivered a statement at the IPU Committee on Peace and International Security during the discussion of amendments to the resolution on the two-state solution in Palestine and Israel. He also participated in the meeting of the Committee on International Humanitarian Law, which addressed the impact of armed conflicts on children’s rights.
At the Bureau of the Committee on Peace and International Security, Oleksandr Sanchenko presented the Ukrainian delegation’s proposal for a new committee resolution on ensuring a just and sustainable peace, accountability for crimes, and compensation for victims of aggression. The proposal was supported and will become the main focus of the committee’s work for the coming year.
First Deputy Chair of the Budget Committee, Ivan Krulko, defended a number of amendments to the resolution on the impact of conflicts on sustainable development. Notably, the adopted amendments addressed ecocide, UN reform, the inadmissibility of strikes on civilian infrastructure, the inviolability of internationally recognized borders, and the establishment of a compensation mechanism.
