The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in the Forum ‘Ukraine’s Accession to the EU: Shaping a Transformational Agenda’. The event brought together the heads of the Verkhovna Rada committees, representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the European Commission, the expert community, civil society, etc.

The Forum discussed key aspects of transformations in the rule of law and strengthening of democratic institutions in Ukraine under martial law. In particular, the discussion focused on strengthening trust in state institutions and their resilience in times of war, which is an important step on the path to European integration. Particular attention was paid to public administration reform as a foundation for Ukraine’s future capabilities within the EU. It was also emphasised that joining the European Union is a national project that requires the active participation of civil society and the consolidation of efforts of all stakeholders.

“The main goal was to discuss the strategic priorities of the roadmaps to be presented for the opening of negotiations on the relevant sections, as well as the next steps in their implementation. These are plans for our transformation in such areas as the rule of law, public administration and the functioning of democratic institutions. These are our benchmarks for the coming years to work towards achieving the necessary standards for our country's full membership in the European Union,” said the First Vice Speaker.

Oleksandr Korniienko noted that Ukraine has done a lot to develop democracy during the war. For the first time in a long time, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine was represented in the process of negotiations on the enlargement of the European Union. Members of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation are actively involved in the work of the relevant working groups. The Verkhovna Rada is involved in shaping roadmaps and developing the actions we need. In the future, this will significantly accelerate all subsequent stages of European integration, including the implementation of decisions,” said the First Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament.

In addition, Oleksandr Korniienko stressed that an important aspect of communication work is to inform the public about the EU accession process – it is necessary to dispel myths, inform about new rights, responsibilities and opportunities that are opening up for citizens. He thanked everyone who is working to achieve Ukraine's goal of joining the EU, stressing the importance of continuing efforts to fulfil all the tasks.
