The results of the European Parliament elections held on Sunday, 9 June, give reason to hope that Europe will continue to maintain its pro-Ukrainian course.

This was stated by the Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Olena Kondratiuk, on her Facebook page.

“The main conclusion of yesterday’s elections is that the centrists retain their leadership. I am very pleased to congratulate the European People’s Party, which won the elections. By the way, the EPP includes two Ukrainian parliamentary parties 2 Batkivshchyna and European Solidarity. The EPP has always maintained a pro-Ukrainian position, so I hope that the European Parliament will continue the same line,” said Olena Kondratiuk.

The Vice-Speaker said that the Social Democrats came in second place. The Liberals from Renew Europe came third, although they ‘slipped’ in terms of the number of mandates. Unfortunately, the Greens worsened their result.

“Eastern European countries showed more or less predictable results. But the classical European countries have demonstrated a clear trend towards right-wing and far-right parties,” said Olena Kondratiuk.

This means that the far-right pro-russian Freedom Party is in first place in Austria. The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany is in second place, and its result is better than the ruling party of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In France, the far-right National Rally party of pro-russian Marine Le Pen took first place.

“I am impressed by the recent statement by Ursula von der Leyen, the current President of the European Commission from the European People’s Party. She said that the result of the far right means a great responsibility for the centrists: it is they who must unite for the sake of a stable, strong and effective Europe. I believe that the centrist political forces will cope with this task and create a broad coalition,” the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed.
