Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk and First Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Korniienko met with the delegation of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania headed by the Speaker of the Seimas Victoria Cmilyte-Nielsen. At the beginning of the meeting Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked his Lithuanian colleagues for the steady and reliable support of Ukraine from the first days of the war both in the domestic and international arenas.

“Lithuania fully supports Ukraine. It is about military, macro-financial, humanitarian assistance, shelter for Ukrainians fleeing from war. You are trendsetters in the support of Ukraine. Ukraine highly appreciates and is grateful for it,” Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized.

He also noted that the resumption of the work of the Assembly of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, which met today in Kyiv, is important for the deepening of relations between the two countries and their parliaments.
Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked Lithuanian colleagues for strong support of Ukraine on its European integration path. He informed about the state of implementation by Ukraine of seven requirements of the European Commission necessary for the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s full membership in the EU, and assured that by the end of the year Ukraine strives to fulfill all recommendations.

The Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament also noted that Ukraine is actively preparing to join NATO, and the decisions and resolutions of the NATO Summit in Vilnius in 2023 will be important.

“Our cooperation in the direction of the EU and NATO will be very useful in terms of expert support to the Parliament of Ukraine in passing the issues related to the preparation of the necessary draft laws,” Ruslan Stefanchuk called on his Lithuanian colleagues.
The parties also discussed possible participation of Lithuania in further reconstruction of Ukraine, decision-making in strengthening sanctions pressure on russia and bringing russia to justice for all the crimes it committed in Ukraine.

In his turn, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko also stressed the importance of interparliamentary relations between Ukraine and Lithuania.

“Relations between our parliaments are traditionally active, aimed at real and quick results. Their role and effectiveness have increased significantly since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. And the level of communication and cooperation that takes place between the parliaments of Ukraine and Lithuania is an example of how ideas and plans can be quickly implemented into real actions and steps,” Oleksandr Kornienko stressed.

He also added that Ukraine highly appreciates the support of such reliable partners as Lithuania on our European integration and Euro-Atlantic path: “Being a person involved in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, it is important for me that Ukraine is on the way to joining the Alliance. And now the support of partners is very valuable for us, who convey the idea that in fact Ukraine will be an important member of NATO.  Equally as with Ukrain’s accession to the EU. And we are sincerely grateful to the Lithuanian Parliament for supporting Ukraine in both these directions”.
In her turn, Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Victoria Cmilyte-Nielsen expressed deep respect and admiration for the courage of the Ukrainian people. She noted that after her first visit to Ukraine in March, today she was pleasantly impressed by the fact that “Kyiv is coming to life”. However, she said, after her visit to Kyiv region – the towns of Bucha and Borodyanka – she was shocked by the consequences of russian terror.

“We see the tactics of russian terrorists. That is why it is very important not to stop supporting Ukraine, to make it stronger every day. The message we came with is that the Lithuanian Parliament is with you!” the Speaker assured her Ukrainian colleagues.
She reminded that the Seimas had adopted a number of decisions and resolutions in support of Ukraine in recent months, which proved that the Lithuanian Parliament was “equally supportive of both the leaders and the opposition in assisting Ukraine”. Therefore, Lithuania will continue to take an active part in supporting Ukraine in its struggle against the aggressor and further restoration of the liberated territories”, Victoria Cmilyte-Nielsen assured her Ukrainian colleagues.
