The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked the President of the German Bundestag Berbel Bass for her visit to Ukraine, which has become another page in the ongoing dialogue between the two parliaments.
"Your arrival to Ukraine is a really historic event. You have not only shown your courage, you have shown support for the Ukrainian people. It is also symbolic that the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation in Ukraine coincided with Mother’s Day, which is always a symbol of reconciliation and a symbol of respect for each other in the Ukrainian family,” Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
As for Germany's support for Ukraine in this war and the struggle for its independence, Ruslan Stefanchuk expressed hope for the speedy implementation of the Bundestag's decision to provide our country with heavy weapons.
On top of that, Ruslan Stefanchuk expressed gratitude to all the German people who support Ukraine's accession to the EU, and appealed to the Parliament of this country to support our state.
In addition, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament called on the representatives of Germany to support Ukraine in achieving justice in international judicial institutions. He reminded that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the atrocities of the Russian Federation in Ukraine as the genocide of the Ukrainian people.
"This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor having been committed by Soviet and Stalinist criminals in Ukraine. Therefore, I would like to ask you to initiate consideration of the issue of recognizing both the crimes that took place 90 years ago and those that are being committed now, as genocide of the Ukrainian people, which has a systemic character," Ruslan Stefanchuk urged and expressed another request for the Bundestag to consider the possibility of building a monument dedicated to 8 million Ukrainians who also fell victim to World War II.
In conclusion, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine addressed the President with the request of an ordinary Ukrainian girl Hanna Polonska, who dreams of appealing to the Bundestag and telling about the atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine.
"I believe that by working together we will give an opportunity to every Ukrainian and Ukraine as a whole to recover," Ruslan Stefanchuk said, thanking Berbel Bass for being a driver of change in Europe's attitude toward Ukraine.
For her part, the President of the German Bundestag Berbel Bass noted that for her, the visit to Ukraine is a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, especially on the symbolic Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation.
According to her words, it is the memory of the past that makes it possible to solve the problems of the present. And the exhibition in the Bundestag clearly demonstrates the terrible realities in Ukraine, having been brought by the brutal war by Russia. The President of the Bundestag expressed her unequivocal support for Ukraine's aspirations to join the EU.
"We will do our best to support EU accession and, where it is possible, we will try to speed up and simplify the consultation and legislative process. In this war, Ukraine also defends European values ??and therefore deserves this recognition and accession to the EU. 61% of the German population supports Ukraine's accession to the EU. I can say that they support 100%, but I want to emphasize that these 61% support accelerated accession to the EU," said Berbel Bass and also supported the idea of ??Germany's regional patronage in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
The President of the Bundestag also said that the resolution on recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people is already in the Committee for Petitions and the process is not over yet.
"After this procedure, of course, there will be a discussion and a decision will be made. As for the erection of the monument, it is also a very important topic of memory, an important direction of what we remember, what happened and can happen, how we can preserve memories even if there are no witnesses left," said Berbel Bass.
At the end of the meeting, the Head of the Office of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Vyacheslav Shtuchny also addressed the German parliamentarians, thanking them for their visit and support during the difficult times for our country.
