During her speech, Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk noted that ‘women's leadership is boldly and confidently moving forward’, despite all the changes in the world related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulties faced by humanity and each country.
“We are witnessing global changes on the political and gender map of the world: the election of Maia Sandu as President of Moldova, and the first female Vice President in the history of the United States, Kamala Harris, the world's youngest Prime Minister in Finland, Sanna Marin. As well as the formation of governments with equal representation of women and men on a 50 to 50 basis in Canada and Belgium. All this is a response to the public demand for greater participation of women in politics. This is the result of women's struggle for their rights and the global changes in politics that have taken place in recent years. Politics has ceased to be a purely male affair, politics no longer has an exclusively male face,” Olena Kondratiuk emphasized.
According to the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, when talking about the international experience of the struggle for women's rights and representation in politics, it is worth noting, recognizing and being proud of the positive changes taking place in Ukraine.
According to preliminary estimates, Olena Kondratiuk noted that almost 36% of the candidates elected in the local elections on October 25 are women. The parties with the most seats in local elections brought 34% to 40% of women to local councils.
Acting the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine added that for the first time the Parliament demanded 40% of people of the same sex in the electoral lists of parties. For the first time, Ukraine has gained experience in holding local elections under such a quota. “And it seems to me that the first step on this path has been effective,” stressed Olena Kondratiuk.
In her opinion, such success and the level of women's representation would be impossible without the active position of the Ukrainian Women's Congress and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
