Polish senator Jaroslaw Obremski presented to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy the Polish Senate’s decision to recognize the Holodomor 1932-33 as genocide against the Ukrainian people

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy met with a Polish senator, Deputy Chairman of the Foreign and European Union Affairs Committee Jaroslaw Obremski. During the meeting, the senator handed over to the speaker the Polish Senate’s decision that recognizes the Holodomor 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

"I was very happy to see the results of the Senate’s voting upon the decision that I have been working over. All the senators did vote in favour in one voice, said the senator. - The following four elements are believed to drive the senate voting". According to him, in the 20th century there was committed a mass of manslaughter crimes among which the Holodomor in Ukraine is the least known.  Therefore, the truth about it must be disseminated. The second element was named to be the acute need to educate and witness against the communist ideology. The Holodomor was an instrument in the struggle against Ukrainian independent peasantry and manifestations of Ukrainianship. And the main element is sympathy to the people of Ukraine.

The Chairman Parubiy, in turn, stressed the high importance of Poland’s participation in the event that Ukraine marks today - in the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor. "And the Senate’s decision is an intelligible sign of great friendship for us," he said.

Both Ukraine and Poland celebrate this year a 100th anniversary of restoration of their statehood.  "We have defended our independence before the onslaught of Russia - that is the same foe as a hundred years ago," stated the Chairperson of the Ukrainian Parliament.

A.Parubiy stressed the importance of having a common position on many issues, including the Nord Stream 2, the Holodomor as well as energy and security to name a few.

The head of parliament underscored that inter-parliamentary contacts between Ukraine and Poland are the stablest ones and they should be strengthened through revealing the essence of the Nazi regimes that had stirred up animosity between the peoples of Poland and Ukraine.

He also emphasized the need to mention good pages of the common history.
