On Tuesday, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has voted for adoption of the Law of Ukraine on amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine (re strengthening responsibility for violating citizens’ electoral rights) as a basis and in entirety.
Calling on the people’s deputies to vote for this bill, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov stressed the necessity of its adoption in order to secure “fair and transparent elections”.
“Previously, the authority was falsifying elections and now it introduces criminal responsibility for election fraud,” he said, adding that the law introduces criminal responsibility “for any attempt to falsify elections in the constituencies or influence the will of our electorate.” “These are fundamental difference that took place in our country,” stressed Chairperson of the Parliament.
The Parliament adopted the bill by 223 votes.
