The bill (Reg. No. 4561a) suggests establishing that Ukraine implements its course towards European integration aiming at membership in the European Union and ensures national security through cooperation with the system of collective security, as well as integration with NATO and acquiring its membership.

In connection with this, Ukraine’s membership in any international and supranational unions that would contradict Ukraine’s political and economic integration with the European Union shall be prohibited.

The respective amendments shall be made to the laws “On the Principles of Domestic and Foreign Policy” and “On the Principles of Ukraine’s National Security”.

Opinions of the Committee members, as to expediency of adoption of the bill, divided. The people’s deputies did not uphold the suggestion to recommend the Verkhovna Rada adopt this bill as a basis.

Following the results of discussion, Committee Chairperson Volodymyr Lytvyn suggested that this issue should be considered by the newly elected Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine proceeding from the interests of national security.
