The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze, and the First Deputy Chair of the Committee, Vadym Halaychuk, took part in a meeting with representatives of the European Parliament's Committee on Defence and Security.
During the meeting, they discussed, first and foremost, the difficult situation in Ukraine against the backdrop of constant attacks by russia and the destruction of energy infrastructure, as well as the need for even greater support for Ukraine from its partners.
The Chair of the Committee noted that Ukraine has no illusions about the ‘negotiation process’ because russia shows no willingness to end the war; on the contrary, its actions and statements indicate its intention to continue its aggression. Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze called on MEPs not to place their hopes in the so-called negotiations. ‘russia cannot be persuaded to make peace; it can only be forced to do so by force. Therefore, please continue to explain to your societies that peace will not come through talks with russia and that we must jointly put pressure on the aggressor to force it to change its position,’ said the Chair of the Committee.
She noted the importance of Ukraine's participation in the new EU defence programme SAFE (Security Action for Europe), which was adopted in May 2025 and aims to strengthen Europe's defence capabilities by 2030. The programme provides for the allocation of up to €150 billion to EU member states in the form of long-term loans for joint arms purchases (air defence systems, drones and ammunition). As a partner, Ukraine can participate in joint purchases, integrate its defence-industrial complex into the EU ecosystem and place orders for weapons production at Ukrainian enterprises. "This is very important. And I believe that we must now work together on various forms of military support for Ukraine, such as cooperation with Ukrainian defence enterprises based on the Danish or Dutch model, which are underutilising their potential due to the limited resources that we can currently invest in them," said Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze.
The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU also called on her colleagues in the European Parliament to work together with the United States to continue and strengthen assistance to Ukraine.
Considerable attention was paid during the meeting to the progress of reforms in Ukraine. ‘Our partners understand the priority of the challenges posed by the war, but they emphasise that real, meaningful reforms remain the key argument for further support for Ukraine,’ said Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze.
Regarding the elections, the Committee Chair reminded that, according to the law, it is impossible to hold them under martial law, as it is impossible to guarantee not only security but also the transparency and democratic nature of the process.
First Deputy Chair of the Committee Vadym Halaychuk stressed the importance of Ukraine's participation in joint infrastructure projects with EU countries, particularly in the areas of transport, energy and logistics. Participation in these projects, he said, would already enable Ukraine to gradually integrate into these areas.
