Denmark has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and considers EU enlargement one of its key priorities, in particular supporting Ukraine’s path toward European integration. Denmark’s Presidency is also important for strengthening military assistance to Ukraine and increasing sanctions pressure on russia.

This was stated by Member of Parliament Yevheniia Kravchuk, Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy and member of Ukraine’s permanent delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

«Denmark currently holds the Presidency of the European Union. The country considers enlargement, particularly supporting Ukraine’s European integration path, as one of its priorities. This was officially stated by the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen. At the same time, Denmark understands that Hungary is artificially blocking EU-Ukraine accession talks. Therefore, there must be pressure from all 26 EU member states and separately from Brussels on Hungary,» the politician noted.

According to her, the artificial nature of the blockade is also evidenced by the fact that the European Commission has clearly stated: Ukraine is ready and has fulfilled all the conditions for opening the first cluster.

«We are talking about the first cluster because it is the foundational section — without it, no other clusters can be opened. In fact, Ukraine is already ready to open the chapter on foreign, security, and defense policy, but without the first cluster, the path forward is impossible,» the MP emphasized.

She added that Denmark’s presidency of the EU is important not only for Ukraine’s European integration:

«Denmark is crucial for us in terms of military support. For instance, the so-called ‘Danish model’ has been officially recognized as one of the most optimal for Ukraine. It involves another country funding Ukraine’s defense industry and purchasing weapons directly from manufacturers. Another important aspect is increasing sanctions pressure on russia. Denmark is also interested in this, as russian shadow fleet vessels exit the Baltic Sea through the Danish Straits,» the parliamentarian said.

She emphasized that one of Denmark’s declared priorities is working to ensure that all EU countries stop purchasing liquefied gas through russian terminals, as well as the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions against russia. Denmark also proposes a stricter approach to ship insurance to eliminate loopholes and prevent vessels from the “shadow fleet” from receiving insurance from Western countries.
