On May 20, 2025, under the chairmanship of Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, and Emily Thornberry, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, joint hearings were held.

The hearings were attended by Ukrainian Members of Parliament, including Deputy Chair of the Committee Oleksandr Kopylenko, Committee Secretary Andriy Sharaskin, Subcommittee Chairs Mariya Ionova, Olha Rudenko, and Yelyzaveta Yasko, as well as Committee members Nataliya Loktionova and Iryna Herashchenko.

The main topics of the joint hearings were the security and humanitarian situation in Ukraine, countering russian disinformation and propaganda, as well as the development of Ukrainian–British bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current situation in Ukraine, prospects for a ceasefire, the need to strengthen comprehensive assistance to Ukraine in repelling the armed aggression of the russian federation, and the provision of effective security guarantees. They also addressed sanctions policy toward the aggressor state, the utilization of frozen russian assets for the restoration of the Ukrainian economy, the release of prisoners of war and civilians from russian captivity, the establishment of an international tribunal against russia, and the importance of holding accountable those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Ukrainian people.

Members of the relevant foreign affairs committees discussed the current state of Ukrainian–British cooperation and interparliamentary dialogue, emphasizing the need to maintain continuous communication between the respective committees, the future participation of Verkhovna Rada representatives in the events of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, as well as the practical implementation of the Century Partnership Agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Additionally, Ukrainian and British parliamentarians addressed the importance of intensifying efforts to counter russian propaganda and disinformation, combat the spread of russian narratives through various cultural and educational initiatives, protect freedom of speech, and prevent interference in the internal affairs of states via social media platforms.

Special attention during the meeting was given to discussing Ukraine’s prospects for accession to the EU and NATO.

Chairman of the Committee Oleksandr Merezhko and committee members expressed their gratitude to their British counterparts for their ongoing support and attention to Ukraine.
