In honor of the Day of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, which is celebrated annually in late February, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine must adopt a Statement on those events and hear a report from the Prosecutor General on the state of investigation of crimes against Euromaidan participants and the Revolution of Dignity. This was stated by Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk during the Conciliation Council of Deputy Factions and Groups.
“This week, on February 20, we will commemorate the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, the seventh anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity. Unfortunately, the just punishment for murders and excessive violence has disappeared from the government's agenda,” she said.
According to the Vice Speaker, given the first, but obviously not the last, decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in Maidan victims of the Yanukovych regime's arbitrariness, “the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine's lack of proper assessment of those events seems extremely unfair.” Olena Kondratiuk reminded that last year the draft Resolution No. 2739 “On the Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the Sixth Anniversary of the Euromaidan and the Revolution of Dignity” was drafted with the participation of the leaders of the mono-majority and democratic opposition factions, however, this Resolution was never considered.
“I am convinced that this year the Verkhovna Rada cannot stand aside and turn a blind eye to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights. That is why I call on all colleagues to unite, work out and adopt a new version of the Statement on the Seventh Anniversary of Euromaidan and the Revolution of Dignity, taking into account the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights,” said Olena Kondratiuk.
According to her, the MPs must do everything possible to help more than two thousand victims and the families of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred to receive justice. According to the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, amendments to the legislation on convictions in absentia should be adopted too.
“In its recent resolution, the European Parliament also called on the Ukrainian authorities to continue to investigate the crimes committed on Euromaidan and to ensure immediate justice for the victims and their families. Therefore, I make a proposal to invite the Prosecutor General of Ukraine to the Verkhovna Rada this week. She should report to the parliament and the public on the progress and current results of the investigation of the Maidan cases,” Olena Kondratiuk said.
