A Ukrainian parliamentary delegation attends the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine delegation participated in the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held on October 13-17 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The IPU Assembly was attended by two thousand parliamentarians from one hundred fifty countries from around the globe. The backbone topic of the 141st Assembly’s discussion was “Parliamentary Mechanisms and Role of Parliaments in Strengthening Law of Nations and Promoting Regional Cooperation”.

The IPU Assembly also discussed the issues of youth political activity, protection of human rights and gender equality.

Within the framework of the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation took part in the 30th session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.

At a meeting of the Geopolitical Group “12+”, a member of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation Lesia Vasylenko, MP, was elected to the Bureau of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.

Among achievements of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation at the IPU Assembly, there was named stopping establishing a special commission on sanctions against parliamentarians. “This is a project of the Russian Federation that wanted to have a fully controllable, puppet-like international mechanism for condemning (exercising pressure upon) the states, which have imposed sanctions against the State Duma deputies. This is a well-defined victory of our delegation and our trusted friends and partners - Great Britain,” the parliamentarian explained.

According to Lesia Vasylenko, “Alona Shkrum spoke about the nuclear arsenal we gave in exchange for security guarantees and about international law that is seemingly in eclipse at present. At a sitting of the peace and security committee, currently under consideration there is possibility of visiting the combat areas by inter-parliamentary delegations. And this seems to be of particular significance, because, as it has turned out, it is by far not the whole world that knows what is happening in Ukraine and what is the state of play in the Ukrainian-Russian relations".

“Climate change is the number one issue for the whole world. The topic of armed conflicts resulting from climate change has recently gained particular relevance over the globe. And I was well heard when repeatedly speaking about the impact of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation upon transboundary pollution and the long-term consequences that will manifest themselves in decades for the whole European region due to the un-satisfactory state of the environment,” the parliamentarian stated. - The aggression was also talked about through the prism of violations of patients' rights and violations of women's and children's rights. For example, in the annexed Crimea,” the representative of the Ukrainian delegation said.

Summing up the delegation’s work, Lesia Vasylenko emphasized: "The voice of Ukraine was heard at nearly all inter-parliamentary platforms that have been working in Belgrade since last Saturday".

Worthy of note

The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments.

It empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development.  The IPU is inching ever closer to universal membership, with 179 Member Parliaments out of the 193 countries in the world.

The Organization, created by a small group of parliamentarians in 1889, has grown into a vibrant global entity committed to promoting democracy, equality, human rights, development and peace. IPU Members work together for positive change, both in their own countries and internationally. All parliaments are welcome to join the IPU if they are lawfully established national bodies operating in States or aspirational States recognized by the United Nations. Decisions on admitting, readmitting and suspending Members or their rights are taken by the IPU’s Governing Council.

The Organization also has 12 Associate Members – mostly parliaments drawn from groups of nations, or similar bodies. They include the Arab Parliament, the European Parliament and other parliamentary organizations in Africa and the Americas.
