During the official visit to the Portuguese Republic, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Portugal Luís Montenegro.
During the meeting, the parties discussed further support for Ukraine, current defence situation, European integration, and defence cooperation.
Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked Portugal for its unwavering support for Ukraine since the beginning of russian full-scale invasion. He emphasised that for Ukraine it is important that the support covers key directions, such as political, military, financial, and humanitarian assistance.
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine informed about the current situation along the frontline and yet another violation by russia of the ceasefire proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“russia must be compelled to come to the negotiating table. However, any ceasefire should not become a pause for the aggressor to regroup, but a genuine step towards saving human lives and achieving a just peace,” emphasised Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Particular attention was paid to cooperation in the defence sector, particularly in the field of high technologies. Ruslan Stefanchuk noted that Ukraine has unique experience of modern warfare, and that strengthening cooperation between states will contribute to enhancing the security of Ukraine, Portugal, and Europe as a whole.
The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s European integration. Portugal reaffirmed its full support for Ukraine’s path towards membership in the European Union.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada also expressed gratitude to Portugal for its support for the Ukrainian community, which today serves as an important bridge between the two nations.
Ruslan Stefanchuk also thanked Portugal for its readiness to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction and for its consistent solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
