In the framework of the event "Constitutional Control in European Countries: Issues of Formation of Independent Constitutional Control Bodies", the Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk noted that the Constitution Day of Ukraine is an event as crucial and fundamental for Ukrainian sovereignty and statehood as the Independence Day of Ukraine: "This is the moment when Ukraine received its legal passport and has the opportunity today, using all the principles of international law, to adhere to all those principles and foundations, mutual understanding and support for each other."
Therefore, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expressed his gratitude to the "fathers" who drafted the Constitution and to the people's deputies of Ukraine who had the honour of adopting this constituent act of the Ukrainian people in 1996.
"The IX convocation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is the first to adopt the Law on Improving the Procedure for Selecting Candidates for the Position of a Judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine on a truly competitive basis," said Ruslan Stefanchuk, adding that these legislative changes created a new competitive selection procedure that significantly limited political influence on the composition of the Court: "The Parliament has proved its political will in establishing an independent and professional Constitutional Court of Ukraine. And we already have the first practical results — on 23 May this year, the Parliament elected one CCU judge under a new competitive procedure."
"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will continue to move forward with reforms. We will continue to be determined to do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine has the opportunity to become a full-fledged member of the European Union in the near future," said Ruslan Stefanchuk.
In conclusion, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada expressed his gratitude to the participants for the professional discussion: "It is through the discussion that we are getting closer to the truth — and it enables Ukrainian legislation today, regardless of what it was, is or will be, to make the right decisions." He also noted that the Ukrainian Parliament, especially during this period, has demonstrated the high quality of people who, from the first day of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, have been doing everything to ensure that Ukraine has the governance, necessary legislation and political decisions.
