The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko joined the discussion of the topic of women’s participation in Ukrainian politics and decision-making within the framework of the Seventh Ukrainian Women’s Congress on the topic “Women’s Leadership. Time for recovery. Time to rebuild”.

“Post-war Ukraine is also about increasing opportunities for women to engage in politics,” said Oleksandr Korniienko.

He noted that many will return from abroad with an active leadership position: “And this is a unique chance for us to involve them in the political and social life of the country.”

In addition, the First Vice Speaker stressed that as a state, Ukraine must take certain steps to do so – to adopt new legislation on parties, amend the Electoral Code of Ukraine and address the issue of greater involvement of women in public service, in particular, in high positions.

“We have a window of opportunity to resolve this situation, for example, through education and promotion of ideas,” added Korniienko.

At the same time, he stressed that in this context, it is important to realise that Europe is a party system. “Discussions on a new draft law on parties are ongoing. And this is the next logical step – their development,” said the First Vice Speaker, calling for a shift from advocacy to its adoption.

In conclusion, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphasised the strong speeches of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska and the Vice Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk: “These were correct and strong messages.”
