Today, the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine received from the Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova the report of the European Commission on Ukraine within the framework of the EU Enlargement Package, which contains a recommendation to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

During the meeting, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko thanked the Ambassador for her support of Ukraine and willingness to help in the issues of European integration.

“Ukraine applauds the decision of the European Commission to recommend to the European Council to start negotiations with Ukraine on accession to the EU. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will immediately start consultations with the Government on the necessary steps to implement the recommendations outlined in the conclusions,” the First Vice-Speaker said.

Katarina Mathernova, for her part, congratulated the leadership of the Parliament on the historic event and promised the EU’s assistance in Ukraine’s further European integration.

“We are proud that you have done so much and are ready to do even more. And we are ready to assist you in this,” said the Ambassador.

The meeting was also attended by the Vice Speaker of the Parliament Olena Kondratiuk and the Secretary General of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Viacheslav Shtuchnyi.
