During his visit to the Republic of Latvia, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk met with former President of Latvia Egils Levits.
“It is always important to appreciate the support of those countries that have provided invaluable assistance to Ukraine since the first days of the full-scale invasion,” said Ruslan Stefanchuk during the meeting.
He also stressed that Ukraine highly appreciates the fact that it was under the leadership of Egils Levits that Latvia, without hesitation, supported our country in an unprovoked war.
The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament thanked Egils Levits for Latvia’s military, financial and humanitarian assistance and, especially, for Latvia’s consistent support of Ukraine’s membership in the EU. In particular, Ruslan Stefanchuk stressed that this year Ukraine is seeking to start negotiations on full membership in the EU.
In addition, the Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine thanked Latvia for training Ukrainian military in accordance with NATO standards in 2022 and plans to continue and significantly expand the relevant programmes this year.
The parties also discussed the issue of bringing russia to justice for its crimes. In particular, Egils Levits promised to continue to pay special attention to this issue as a lawyer.
At the end of the meeting, the former President of the Republic of Latvia assured the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine that “the policy of support that Latvia professes towards Ukraine will continue and will last until complete victory”.
