“On 1 April, the most dangerous country in the world begins its one-month presidency of the UN Security Council. What is this if not a bad April Fool’s joke?” said the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko on the air of Radio Liberty.
The First Vice Speaker stressed that the russian federation will do what it usually does on all world platforms – manipulate any documents to build its own parallel reality: “It is clear that there is only one thing behind this – to remove from the agenda as much as possible the questions to russia that Ukraine and the whole world are asking. And these are specific questions about when russia will withdraw its troops from sovereign Ukraine and implement the UN General Assembly’s decision on the territorial integrity of Ukraine twice already.”
“World leaders and the community need to think about what to do about it,” said Korniienko, adding that the Ukrainian side is actively involved in this. “It is hard to imagine russia being in the UN at all. It is not right for a state that creates danger and commits genocide in the twenty-first century to preside over the UN Security Council,” he stressed.
In addition, the First Vice-Speaker said that Ukrainian representatives to the UN and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are well aware of the situation: “Our recent resolutions at the UN General Assembly have shown that we have a professional team that works and gathers support. We see this at the level of work with the countries of the Global South. This is a separate area of diplomatic work that already has results, while we have plans to strengthen it.”
