The Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk got acquainted with the system of shelters of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
“The readiness of our higher education institutions to work and provide quality education even under martial law and the constant threat of russian attacks on civilian infrastructure is very important,” she said during her visit to the university.
The Vice-Speaker noted that thanks to the equipped shelters, which are designed for 3,000 students, the university is able to provide a blended learning process for undergraduate students with presence in classes. It has everything you need: secure classrooms, internet, electricity, water, and working toilets.
During the year of russia’s full-scale invasion, the issue of providing shelters for educational institutions has become a priority in Ukraine, as 3151 educational institutions have suffered from bombing and shelling, 440 of them have been completely destroyed, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphasized.
“By the end of 2022, 88% of vocational higher education institutions and 75% of schools were provided with shelters. The situation with kindergartens is worse – only 56%. There is still work to be done. As a country, we need to ensure that 100% of educational institutions have reliable shelters equipped with all the necessary facilities. We must also restore and build new kindergartens, schools, and universities with this in mind. Because the most important thing is the safety and protection of the lives of our children, pupils, students, educators, teachers and professors,” emphasized Olena Kondratiuk.
