The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk met with the President of Latvia Egils Levits.

“Today, Mr. President is acting as an advocate of Ukraine in the international arena to establish a special tribunal for the crime of russian aggression. We are sincerely grateful to Egils Levits for his personal leadership in this matter as the Head of State and an experienced lawyer and jurist,” emphasized Olena Kondratiuk.

Ukraine appreciates the President’s support for the investigation of war crimes committed by russia in the International Criminal Court and Ukraine’s claims against the aggressor country in other international judicial institutions, the Vice Speaker added.

At the same time, Egils Levits outlined several scenarios for the creation of a special tribunal: on the basis of the UN, by agreement of several countries, or on the basis of the EU or the Council of Europe.

The President of Latvia also expressed his full support for Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union. “Latvia is making every effort to ensure that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union begin as soon as possible,” Mr. Levits emphasized.

“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has done everything in its power at the legislative level to create conditions for the start of negotiations on EU accession in 2023,” said Olena Kondratiuk.

The Vice Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine emphasized that 35 European integration laws were adopted last year. All the laws were adopted to implement the seven main recommendations of the European Commission on granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country.

The President of Latvia Egils Levits also expressed confidence that Ukraine will win the war against the russian aggressor and become one of the strongest NATO members. He assured that he constantly keeps the issue of supporting Ukraine’s victory in the focus of his attention, raising it at all meetings and international platforms.
