The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations and promise to adopt European integration laws contained in the seven main recommendations of the European Commission to Ukraine as a candidate country for EU accession by the end of the year.
This was emphasized by the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk following today’s meeting.
«Today we have adopted three key European integration laws on media, transparent procedure of appointment of judges of the Constitutional Court and on national minorities (communities).
Thus, we have paved the way for the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s full accession to the European Union, which can begin as early as in 2023, » the Vice Speaker stressed.
According to her, the adoption of these laws took place in a constructive atmosphere and a very fruitful discussion, in competition as befits a European and democratic Parliament.
The Deputy Chairperson noted that a compromise had been reached in the session hall between different factions and parliamentary groups in the national interests of Ukraine on almost all key comments and controversial issues.
«At my insistence, as the Vice-Speaker from the opposition, together with other deputies, uncharacteristic norms that are not related to the EU Directive on audiovisual services and concerned the electoral process were removed from the Law «On Media».
At the same time, we are aware that the adopted media law is not a constant, it will still change. Its implementation will require substantive monitoring by both media circles in Ukraine and the European Commission for practical compliance with the European values of freedom of speech, » noted Olena Kondratiuk.
The Vice Speaker also noted that she will insist and submit legislative proposals to strengthen the position of the Ukrainian language during the demonstration of films and series on modern online television platforms such as Netflix, Megogo, Sweet.tv, etc.
