The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko held a working meeting with the delegation of the European Security Organization GLOBSEC.
The parties discussed, in particular, the security situation in Ukraine and Europe, which has been endangered by the unprovoked war launched by russia against Ukraine, the provision of military assistance, in particular, air defence systems, as well as the establishment of a Special International Tribunal for the crime of russian aggression against Ukraine.
“European security is decided in Ukraine. When cooperation becomes systemic, it shows that our relations are strong and powerful. And we can achieve a lot together,” the First Vice Speaker emphasized. He added that, despite the fact that winter has begun, fierce battles are being led in the East of Ukraine, because russia does not reduce the pressure, but on the contrary tries to increase it at the expense of fresh mobilized units: “Our Armed Forces are maximally concentrated, heroically resisting this invasion, but Ukraine still needs constant military assistance, which should not just be left at the current level, but increased if possible.”
In addition, Oleksandr Korniienko noted that along with the active phase of the war on the front line, russia continues terrorist attacks on residential, energy and civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine: “Thanks to the assistance of our partners and the supply of air defence systems, we repel most of these missiles, but we need further support of air defence to protect Ukrainian cities from missiles and the population from cold and darkness in winter.”
At the same time, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expressed gratitude for the active participation in the issue of responsibility of the russian federation: “We remember that within the framework of the activities of the European Security Organization GLOBSEC, in particular, the creation of a Special International Tribunal for the crime of aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine was separately raised. Olexandr Korniienko noted that this issue is being seriously promoted, in particular, a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly is being prepared.
For his part, the Chairman of the Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence Oleksandr Zavitnevych stressed that Ukraine has a lot of work to do on the roadmap to the European institutions, as well as one of the main tasks of the relevant Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is full membership in NATO. He also informed that the members of the Committee directly visit the frontline. In particular, they visited Donetsk region on December 6, where the fiercest fighting are being led and the enemy is trying to carry out offensive operations.
