The Ukrainian parliamentary delegation headed by the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko took part in the dialogue session of the Ukrainian delegation with the parliamentarians of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), which was held on the sidelines of the 43rd General Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly).

The event was also attended by parliamentarians from Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Ukrainian delegates had the opportunity to tell in more detail about the unprovoked war started by russia in Ukraine, the consequences of this aggression, the recognition of russia as a terrorist state and the shelling of Ukrainian energy facilities. It is worth noting that the countries participating in the dialogue session stressed the importance of compliance with the United Nations Charter.
“Despite the russian aggression, Ukraine is determined to expand its parliamentary presence in the region of Southeast Asia and together with all partners to overcome global challenges and threats,” the First Vice-Speaker stressed. He expressed hope that “this important format of communication between Ukraine and the ASEAN countries will help not only to improve the inter-parliamentary dialogue between our countries, but also to better understand the mentality of our nation and our principles for the representatives of the ASEAN countries”. “It will also help to understand the brutal aggression we are facing today, when terrorist russia is shelling our cities, destroying infrastructure and killing our people,” added Oleksandr Korniienko.

In addition, the First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament said that the Ukrainian delegation had the opportunity to once again convey that “Ukraine is a legal and sovereign state”: “We are waging a defensive war, we respect the norms of international law. And we are glad that representatives of ASEAN countries also understand how important it is to comply with the UN Charter and maintain global security.”
“Joint parliamentary efforts should be aimed at achieving peace, sustainable development and restoration of a just world order,” Oleksandr Korniienko emphasized. He noted that Ukraine highly appreciates the decision of ASEAN to grant Ukraine observer status: “I am confident that our cooperation will get a new impetus from today”.
For his part, the Member of the Parliament of Ukraine and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Olexander Merezhko noted that during the dialogue session between the ASEAN states and Ukraine “we have talked about the aggression and other crimes committed by russia against Ukraine, as well as drew attention to the steps that ASEAN countries can take to help stop russian aggression and punish the aggressor”.

Finally, the Member of Parliament of Ukraine and the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Olha Rudenko informed the audience about the humanitarian consequences of the russian aggression in Ukraine. She also stressed that russia’s crimes are a manifestation of international terrorism, calling for support for Ukraine on the front of parliamentary diplomacy in the fight against the aggressor.
