The Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations sent a letter to the UN Secretariat with a request for a copy of the documents which confirm Russia’s UN membership and an explanation of the procedure undertaken for Russia to acquire the status of a so-called “successor” to the USSR.

Such an appeal became possible after the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Anti-corruption Policy addressed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine with a request on whether the Ministry has at its disposal official documents certifying the Russian Federation’s status as a “successor” of the USSR, and a confirmation of Russia’s compliance with the procedure for obtaining a membership in the UN and the UN Security Council.

As reported by the People's Deputy Oleksiy Zhmerenetskyi, it turns out that the Ministry had evidence of neither the procedure, through which by which the Russian Federation took the place of the USSR, nor the documents supporting it.

With this in mind, the Initiative Group, which includes the First Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Kornienko, People's Deputies Oleksiy Zhmerenetskyi, Mykyta Poturaev, Maria Meznetseva and others, turned to the American philosopher, political economist and journalist, Stanford University’s professor, Francis Fukuyama with a letter which raises the question of the legitimacy Russia’s membership in the UN Security Council.

The members of the initiative group thanked Francis Fukuyama for his consistent and unequivocal support for Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian war, for his publications, which tremendously helped the world gain a better understanding of Ukraine’s position.

“We listen attentively to the advice that you give to Ukraine, and we wholeheartedly agree with the statement that stopping the carnage that Russia has unleashed in Ukraine is possible only through the destruction of the Russian army and liberation of all Ukrainian lands as a result of military victory over the invader.”

The members of the initiative group hope for the following: “that a serious campaign regarding the fictitious nature of the Russian Federation’s membership  in the UN will finally force the local bureaucrats to react and will finally deprive Russia of the opportunity to hide its bloody crimes under the UN flag.

We want to see the flag of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces next to the flag of Ukraine at the Zaporizhzhia NPP."
