Security remains an important challenge for both the EU and the Eastern Partnership countries. This was stated by the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov during the opening of the 9th Plenary Session of the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly.

"For us, the citizens of Ukraine, the issue of security has become very important over the last 7 years. Today, Ukraine understands better than anyone what it means to protect its land, its people, its state," the Speaker of the Parliament said. He added that the situation is now aggravating in the East of our country and near its borders. And such a policy against its neighbors is a factor that should unite all the countries of the Eastern Partnership and the EU.

According to the Speaker of the Parliament, it is important now not to allow Russia to further destabilize the situation in the region. "We must continue to give due appreciation to aggressive actions, condemn them, and reaffirm our common commitment to European values," he said, thanking for the long-term support of our state.

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada stressed that Euronest is the unique platform for cooperation within the Eastern Partnership and thanks to the participation of parliamentarians and civil society our countries will be able to succeed on democracy, sustainable development and economic prosperity and development under international law. "Almost ten years ago, in May 2011, the first inaugural meeting of the Euronest Assembly took place. During this time, many changes have taken place in the Eastern Partnership region. This means that it is time to look at the results of achieving certain goals and priorities, to adapt them to new realities," he said.

Dmytro Razumkov also noted about that the next Sixth Eastern Partnership Summit, which will take place soon. "I hope that this Summit will not only summarize the achievements of partner countries in relations with the EU and set new strategic goals, but also confirm the European aspirations of those countries whose goal is membership in the European Union," he said. Dmytro Razumkov thanked the European Union for financial support and assistance to Ukraine in the fight against COVID-19 and noted that Ukraine also did not stand aside and joined the fight against the pandemic, in particular, provided its aircraft for medical equipment and assistance to EU countries. "The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone and forced us all to learn to live in new realities. I am confident that our meeting is a good opportunity to exchange views on further steps to overcome the current situation and develop a joint action plan for the future," he said.
