During the meeting with President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda, Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov expressed hope that the high dynamics of relations between Kyiv and Vilnius would be preserved.
“We appreciate the partnership that has developed with the Baltic States, in particular with Lithuania. For us, it's not just words. We remember who stood by us in the most difficult times since 2014,” said the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament during the meeting with the President of Lithuania, who arrived on an official visit to Kyiv.
The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada thanked for the adoption of the “Seimas Resolution on Long-Term Guiding Principles and Inseparability of Lithuania's Foreign and European Policy” in December 2020, which expresses Ukraine's support in our priority areas.
According to the Speaker of the Parliament, it is important that Ukraine and Lithuania remain permanent partners not only in the bilateral format and the ‘Baltic+’ format, but also in various international platforms, namely in the PACE, NATO PA, OSCE PA. “Lithuania is not only a partner, but very often a lawyer for the interests of our state,” he said.
Separately, Dmytro Razumkov noted the joint cooperation within the UN. The Speaker stressed that Ukraine appreciates Lithuania's support in security issues. He also expressed gratitude for the assistance in the treatment and rehabilitation of Ukrainian servicemen who went through the war in eastern Ukraine.
“Security is not just words for us. The war continues in the east of our state, the temporarily occupied territories of Donbass, the annexed and occupied Crimea. Today we received the news that, unfortunately, our serviceman died,” Dmytro Razumkov said. He noted that in recent weeks and months, the situation in eastern Ukraine has deteriorated and a truce has been broken, which has persisted for many months.
Dmytro Razumkov stressed that national security includes economic and energy components. “I am very pleased to state that we have a common view on ‘Nord Stream-2’. Unfortunately, we cannot regard it as an economic project,” he said.
“Ukraine has always been and remains a reliable and responsible transit country for gas. But the supplier state does not use it as business or economic cooperation, but as a mechanism of pressure on Ukraine,” the Speaker said.
According to him, if the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is completed, it will pose a threat not only to Ukraine but also to European countries, as it will be used for political pressure.
“I had the opportunity to talk about this with colleagues from Lithuania and Poland. And we take a common position on this issue. It is important for us and for you to maintain the sanctions imposed on Nord Stream 2, and perhaps to expand them. Because this is the only effective mechanism in relation to the supplier,” Dmytro Razumkov stressed. The Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also raised the issue of violation of human rights and freedoms in Crimea.
“Unfortunately, the situation has remained permanent for many years, and sometimes even worsens. Not only the laws and the Constitution of Ukraine are violated, because Crimea is a part of our state, no matter who wants it. All possible norms of international law are violated too,” he said. Dmytro Razumkov expressed hope for Lithuania's support, in particular, in the issue of access to Crimea by the International Committee of the Red Cross and other international organizations that must ensure respect for human rights.
“In fact, today Russia is turning Ukrainian Crimea into its militarized base and using it exclusively for such interests. It is a threat not only to our state, but also to the Black Sea region, many states of Eastern and Central Europe,” he said.
