The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted as a basis the draft Law No. 3695 “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts Concerning Ensuring Equal Opportunities for Mothers and Fathers to Care for a Child.”
“Parliament has taken the first significant step towards equality between women and men in child care and responsible parenthood. The co-authors of this bill are the MPs from the ‘Equal Opportunities’ Inter-Faction Union,” Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk emphasized.
She also noted that in Ukraine, the main nurden after the birth of a child falls exclusively on the women's shoulders.
“This bill means equal rights for the father in the upbringing and care of babies in the first important months of the baby's life. It is the right of the father to take additional childcare leave, as in many countries of the European Union. For example, in Finland, dads are given up to 9 weeks of such leave, in Portugal – 5 weeks, in Lithuania – 4 weeks”, - noted Olena Kondratiuk
According to her, Ukraine has not created legal conditions for fathers that would allow them to take full responsibility and share with mother’s part of the care for newborns yet. To give the child’s mother, if necessary, the opportunity to work and not ruin her career or business without falling completely out of economic and social life.
“Our bill solves such a problem. This step towards equality is also in line with Ukraine’s commitments under the Council of Europe, the Association Agreement with the EU. I am grateful to everyone who prepared this legislative initiative together with us and voted for it,” noted the Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk, who is also the Co-Chair of the ‘Equal Opportunities’ Inter-Faction Union.
