New law on rehabilitation of victims
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy signed the law of Ukraine on amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine concerning refining the rehabilitation procedure for victims of repressions of the Communist totalitarian regime of 1917-1991 years.
Being the spearhead in making the law, the Chairman of the Parliament has sent the law for signature to the President of Ukraine. Adoption of the law and the follow-up rehabilitation of victims of communist repressions are one of the important steps towards restoring confidence in Ukraine as a state that honors those who have fought arms in hand for its independence.
The law widens largely the list of those who can be subject to rehabilitation.
The newly introduced category of "victims of repression" has pioneered the Ukrainian legislation. These are: spouses (husbands), children of the repressed, as well as other persons who at the time of the repression lived together or were supported by the repressed person.
The rehabilitation procedure has been changed and improved since the one in force (rehabilitation by decisions of the prosecutor's office) does not comply with the Constitution of Ukraine, the law on the prosecutor's office and does not work in fact. That is why a new, entirely different and much more democratic, procedure has been elaborated and is propagated by the law.
