On June 30, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On State Regulation of Organic Production, Circulation, and Labeling of Organic Production (Reg. No13204-1).
The adoption of the Law is driven by the need to bring Ukraine's organic products market into compliance with European standards, as well as to ensure its transparency and clarity for domestic consumers.
The primary objective of the Law is to establish clear and unified requirements for the production, cultivation, and labeling of organic products. This aims to ensure the accuracy of information provided to consumers and to guarantee that the 'organic' label strictly corresponds to the actual characteristics of such products.
The key advancements introduced by the document include:
The introduction of unified, transparent, and clear rules for the production, circulation, and labeling of organic products, fully aligned with current European Union legislation;
The improvement of the state control system within the organic sector, which will enhance the efficiency of oversight regarding compliance with organic legislation, as well as mitigate fraudulent labeling practices and reduce the number of unscrupulous producers;
The stimulation of agricultural and rural development through production diversification, increasing product value-added, and creating new jobs in the organic production, processing, and logistics sectors;
The promotion of the transition toward sustainable agricultural development, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal. This, in turn, will support climate change adaptation, preserve biodiversity, and improve environmental quality.
The implementation of the Law will facilitate the entry of Ukrainian organic products into international high-quality goods markets and attract investment into the development of domestic organic production, making it highly competitive in the EU and globally. Consequently, Ukraine will establish itself as a reliable partner in international agricultural markets.
