First Deputy Chairperson of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk together with Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Policy Andrii Kostin took part in the sitting of the European Commission for Democracy through Law.

The participants of the meeting considered the assessment provided by the Commission on compliance with European standards and values of the draft Law of Ukraine No. 3711 “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Judiciary and Status of Judges’ and some laws of Ukraine on the Supreme Court and Judicial Authorities Functioning.

“Adherence to standards of ethics, professionalism and integrity in the judiciary are key to trusting Ukraine in the eyes of its citizens and international partners, as well as to developing a partnership between Ukraine and the European Union,” noted Ruslan Stefanchuk and added: “That is why the procedure for verifying the integrity and professionalism of judges should be contained in the Bill.”

“The conclusions provided by the Venice Commission should be taken into account in the final version of the bill,” the First Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine noted.

Ruslan Stefanchuk also reminded about holding parliamentary hearings on November 18, 2020 “On the way to a fair trial in Ukraine” where it is planned to discuss the current state and key areas of judicial reform in Ukraine.
