SOLEMN MEETING OF THE VERKHOVNA RADA OF UKRAINE ON THE OCCASION OF TAKING OATHS BY THE NEWLY ELECTED PEOPLE’S DEPUTIES OF UKRAINE, AS WELL AS OPENING OF THE FIST SESSION OF THE VERKHOVNA RADA OF THE EIGHTH CONVOCATION
Solemn meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine
on the occasion of taking oaths by the newly elected people’s deputies of Ukraine
was held on November 27, 2014. Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov opened the solemn meeting.
A choir sang the State Anthem of Ukraine in the session hall.
On behalf of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the seventh convocation Oleksandr Turchynov greeted the newly elected people’s deputies, and wished them fruitful and effective work in the only legislative body of Ukraine and the highest representative body of Ukrainian people.
The Chairperson informed that the following persons are present at the meeting: President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk, members of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, presidents of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma, and Viktor Yushchenko, Chairpersons of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of previous convocations, the people’s deputies of previous convocations, former Prime Ministers, Chief Judge and judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ukraine and heads of higher specialized courts, Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Head of the Central Election Commission, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, chairpersons of central bodies of executive power, Kyiv city mayor, heads of oblast councils and oblast state administrations, primates of churches and religious organizations of Ukraine, representatives of diplomatic missions, NGOs and mass media.
Participants of the solemn meeting observed a moment of silence in memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, as well as military men who rendered their lives for freedom, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and civilians who died in the course of the war against Ukraine brought about by Russia.
Under the Constitution of Ukraine, Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of
Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov invited the people’s deputies jointly with the most
senior people’s deputy to read out the text of the oath.The people’s deputies stood up and read out the text of the oath: “I swear fealty to Ukraine. I undertake the obligation to defend the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine with all my actions, to care of well-being of my Homeland and welfare of the Ukrainian people. I promise to observe the Constitution of Ukraine and the laws of Ukraine and perform my duties in the interest of all my fellow-citizens.”
Oleksandr Turchynov invited the people’s deputies to affix the text of the oath with their seals.
A choir sang the spiritual anthem of Ukraine “Prayer for Ukraine” in the session hall.
Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov asked the people’s deputies to personally sign the text of the oath.
Oleksandr Turchynov informed that in connection withy illegal detention of Nadiia Savchenko on the territory of the Russian Federation, she has personally affixed the text of the oath of the people’s deputy of Ukraine in the presence of her lawyer.
Oleksandr Turchynov noted: “Being guided by the rule of law, the Preparatory Deputy Group took the decision under which the oath signed by Nadiia Savchenko will be shown on the electronic display. Under present circumstances, this is the only possible way to confirm that Nadiia Savchenko has assumed the office as the people's deputy of Ukraine.”
The electronic display has shown the oath of the people’s deputy signed by Nadiia Savchenko.
Having signed the texts of
the oath, the newly elected people’s deputies passed them to the personnel of the
Secretariat, received their personal
voting cards, and registered for participation in the plenary meeting of the first
session of the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation.A break was announced by 12.00 p.m..
