The Parties discussed the current political situation in Ukraine and ways of bilateral cooperation.   

Oleksandr Turchynov noted that Ukraine and Canada are connected with close and friendly relations. “Ukrainians have treated Canadians with affection and they feel that this affection is mutual,” he said. The Chairman of the Parliament also thanked the Canadian people for “support during violent confrontations.”

The Chairman of the Parliament stressed the necessity to first of all restore trust of the people in the government and in law enforcement agencies, the necessity to restore the vertical of power and regular work of law-enforcement bodies. “We have to restore law and order in the country,” he said. “This requires complete reformatting of power in Ukraine.”   

Speaking about developments in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Oleksandr Turchynov informed that the Parliament adopted the Resolution on the address of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the guarantor-sates of the Memorandum on Security Assurances in connection with Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

The Chairman of the Parliament expressed belief that “we will preserve Ukraine united, we will restore its economic potential, we will build a truly European, civilized state which will sign the Association Agreement and in future will become a member of the EU.”  

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada also invited representatives of Canada to participate in the observation of presidential elections in Ukraine.   

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada expressed admiration with courage of Ukrainian people and a pace of implementing reforms in Ukraine. John Baird assured the Ukrainian Party in Canada’s aspiration for future development of cooperation, and expressed belief that cooperation between Ukraine and the IMF will be renewed.      

He also proposed Canada’s assistance in implementing reforms.  

The meeting was attended by senators of the Parliament of Canada, representatives of Ukrainian diaspora in this country, and President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Paul Grod.
