The Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations Valeriy Patskan participated in the International conference “Providing assistance to the victims of violence: problems, achievements, prospects”

 The people’s deputy stressed the problem of violence, particularly domestic one, is quite acute for Ukraine. “Violence and cruelty in the family destroy harmony and cause family ill-being and are one of the preconditions of criminality in the society in general,” noted V.Patskan.

V.Patskan noted also that adoption of the Law “On Prevention of Domestic Violence” more than 10 years ago, settled legal and organizations basis of this activity and was an important step on the way to combating domestic violence. 

The people’s deputy drew attention of those present to the fact that under the bill, committing domestic violence should entail public works for a period from thirty to forty hours or administrative arrest up till five days.      

According to the speaker, formation of legislation in the sphere of human rights and securing equal rights and possibilities of men and women are one of the key tasks of the Committee. V.Patskan informed also that the Committee has initiated parliamentary hearings “State of adherence to human rights in Ukraine” that will be held on June 12, 2013 in order to determine priority directions of the law-making activity in this sphere.

V.Pastkan noted that as of today, the most topical task of the Committee is to harmonize Ukrainian legislation in line with the standards of the Council of Europe; ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence and bring national legislation in line with this Convention.  

Head of UNICEF in Ukraine Yukiye Mokuo, First Deputy Chairman of the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Serhiy Hlushchenko, President of the International Women's Rights Center "La Strada Ukraine" Kateryna Levchenko, AVON Director General in Ukraine Olena Strakova, as well as representatives of ministries and departments, NGOs and human rights organizations participated in the conference, the co-organizer of which was the Committee.
