Problems and prospects for development of journalism in Ukraine were discussed during the conference organized by the Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information jointly with the Institute of Journalism of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University

The issue of protection and maintenance of the level of professionalism in the mass media, as well as professional ethics of Ukrainian journalist were considered. Journalists’ behavior model, as well as the system and peculiarities of journalists’ training were also discussed.
The Committee Chair, Mykola Tomenko, noted that one of the urgent problems of branch development is adherence to current legislation by media community.
M.Tomenko named the situation with legislative support to establishment and support of social broadcasting in Ukraine as the one of the unsettled problems of our legislation. According to him, consideration of the respective bills was held in the Committee. Following the result of discussion, the decision was taken to recommend the Parliament adopt a basis the bill on amendments to the Law “On the System of Social Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine” (Reg. No. 1076-1).
The document suggests establishment of the “Social Broadcasting of Ukraine” (SMU) by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as a legal entity of public law in the organizational and legal form of non-profitable state institution.
It was noted that the document determines principles of Social Broadcasting activities, particularly, its institutional and editorial independency, as provided by the international standards.
Participants of the conference have analyzed the issue of journalism education in Ukraine and professional standards in modern journalistic practice. The issue of Ukrainian journalism in the context of its relations with authorities, etc was also discussed.
