During the first meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deputy group on inter-parliamentary relations with the Russian Federation, the people’s deputy Serhiy Kivalov expressed hope that the work of the deputy union “shall be fruitful, for it is the biggest in our Parliament and consists of 153 people’s deputies”. He noted also that formation of the deputy group on relations with the Parliament of Ukraine was completed in May 2012 in the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The group is headed by Dmytro Sablin.

According to S.Kivalov, the main tasks of the group are as follows: participation in organization and coordination of bilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation; analysis of development of inter-parliamentary relations; promotion of cooperation between parliamentary committees and commissions; establishment, if necessary, of inter-parliamentary unions and bilateral expert groups on elaboration of draft legislative acts, etc.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Ukraine Mykhailo Zurabov, who participated in the meeting of the group, stressed the importance of bilateral relations between our states.

“Another meeting of Russian-Ukrainian inter-parliamentary commission, involving representatives of executive authorities, will be held in Dnipropetrovsk this year. The meeting will be devoted to the issue of cooperation in the sphere of space technology and cosmic exploration, and in the sphere of nuclear-power engineering,” said Mykhailo Zubarov. He stressed that the deputy group on inter-parliamentary cooperation can make such meetings more effective.

The idea of establishing specialized departments in order to strengthen and activate cooperation between the parliaments of both states in top priority spheres was supported during the meeting. In particular, 17 departments were established.
