Presentation of printed publications on the issue of human rights was held in the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations

People’s deputies got acquainted with the second addition of the “Rights of a man and parliaments” (for members of Parliament and personnel of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat) and methodological materials “The draft of principles and guidelines on the role of parliaments in protecting and implementing human rights”, presented by the Program Director at Westminster Consortium for Parliaments and Democracy George Kunnath and representative of the Committee Office of the House of Lords and Human Rights Joint Committee of the UK Parliament Mark Davies.  

 

The Committee Chair Valeriy Patskan thanked publishers for the possibility to get acquainted with the best practices and experience in the sphere of human rights protection. He stressed that this experience shall be used in the further work of the Committee.

 

G.Kunnath emphasized special role played by the parliaments in the process of human rights implementation and protection and noted that “the parliament, as the most important representative body, has special democratic legitimacy which should be used to spread the culture of respect to human rights protection and implementation”.  

 

M.Davies informed on the work of the UK Human Rights Joint Committee and stressed that the parliament as a legislative body of the state shares, together with legislative and judicial branches of power, the obligation to respect, protect and observe human rights.
