Parliamentary Development Project II (PDP II) Gender Coordinator Olena Suslova informed during her speech that the “16 Days against Gender Based Violence” campaign is now being held within the UN Member States. This is an annual campaign that starts on November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and lasts up to December 10 (date of adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly). According to her, the campaign aims at popularizing the ideas of preventing gender-based violence among social circles of the campaign’s member states.

O.Suslova informed the participants of the meeting of the main regulatory provisions of Ukrainian legislation in the sphere of preventing gender-based violence and spoke on article 24 of the Constitution of Ukraine.

The reporter stressed that there are some other regulatory acts in Ukrainian legislation protecting citizens from gender-based violence. Particularly, the Law "On Prevention of Domestic Violence" which, according to O.Suslova, was the first special document in the sphere of combating violence against women among Central and Eastern Europe countries and the CIS. “Adoption of this law testified that countering gender-based violence has become part of the Ukrainian state policy,” O.Suslova said.

O.Suslova drew attention of the participants to the provisions of the Law “On Ensuring Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men”. According to her, this document aims at achieving equality between women and men in all spheres of human activity through legally ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men, eliminating gender discrimination and using special temporary measures targeted at eliminating the imbalance between the opportunities of men and women in exercising equal rights, provided by the Constitution and the laws of Ukraine.
