The event was held by the Council of Europe and the Administration of the President of Ukraine within the framework of joint program of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Reinforcing the fight against ill-treatment and impunity."
Draft code was prepared after processing recommendations and suggestions set forth in expert conclusions of the Council of Europe that were provided to the Administration of the President of Ukraine in December 2011. The President of Ukraine submitted the draft of the Code of Criminal Procedure to the Verkhovna Rada on January 12, 2012.
Representatives of the Committees on Justice; on Legal Policy; on Fighting Organized Crime and Corruption; and on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations participated in the round-table discussion too.
The floor during the discussion took: deputy head of the Committee V. Oliynyk, deputy head of the Committee V. Stretovych, heads of subcommittees V. Moysyk, Yu. Prokopchuk, V. Shemchuk, and people?s deputy S. Piskun.
Participants of the round-table discussion supported the provisions of the Code of Criminal procedure stipulating Ukraine?s dismissal of the three-level criminal process of the Soviet type.
The speakers gave positive evaluation of introducing the procedure of reconciliation and other novelties.
Participants of the round table discussion believe that adoption of the Code of Criminal Procedure will be a serious step towards development of criminal justice and it will be supported by the society. They hope that it will be adopted by the Parliament of Ukraine without delay.
Experts of the Council of Europe stressed that after the Code of Criminal Procedure is adopted and comes into force, certain problems will arise, and the Council of Europe is ready to Assist Ukraine in dealing with them.
