Ukraine and Japan can boost bilateral relations and strengthen bilateral cooperation. Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn met Takahiro Yokomichi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Japan.

 

"We consider your visit as a common desire to boost bilateral dialogue," V.Lytvyn stated. "Parliaments of both states should exert efforts."

 

V.Lytvyn declared that Ukraine wants to strengthen political Ukrainian-Japanese dialogue to develop friendly partnership, and tackle critical regional and global issues.   

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine believes that holding of the Third Session of the Ukrainian-Japanese Cooperation Committee on the level of Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and organization of the first visit of the Head of the Japanese Government to Ukraine will support lasting political dialogue. 

 

V.Lytvyn stressed that development of inter-parliamentary contacts will boost bilateral relations in all spheres. He called for boosting activity of friendship groups in the parliaments.

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine laid emphasis on the concern of the Ukrainian Party about expansion of the normative base of bilateral relations.

 

According to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ukraine and Japan should develop strategic partnership in the industrial, financial and agricultural sectors, as well as in energy-saving technologies, boosting scientific and technical cooperation. V.Lytvyn stated that Ukraine is interested in the investments of Ukrainian business into Ukrainian agriculture. He expects Japanese companies to renew import of crops from Ukraine in 2011.

 

He expects that the coming Third Joint Session of the Coordination Council on the Economic Cooperation with Japan under the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine and the Committee on Business Cooperation with Ukraine of Keidanren Japan Business Federation will strengthen economic dialogue and facilitate implementation of joint projects in different sectors of Ukrainian industry and agriculture.

 

Along these lines, the parties called for signing the Agreement on Mutual Promotion and Protection of Investments. 

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is satisfied with the level of cooperation on the implementation of projects on the basis of "Green Investments Scheme" within the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

 

V.Lytvyn highly appreciated development of bilateral cooperation within the program of Official Development Assistance, especially in the allocation of the first yen credit for modernization of Boryspil International Airport. He informed that Ukraine was interested in the implementation of the project "Construction of a Bridge over the Pivdennyi Buh River in Mykolaiv" and "Construction of the Fourth Subway Line in Kyiv."   

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed that Ukraine highly appreciates technical assistance and grants of the Japanese Government for the development of culture, education, and public health. V.Lytvyn drew attention to the high level of bilateral cooperation in the sphere of culture and education, calling for further exchange of students and teachers.  

 

In his turn, Mr. Yokomichi greeted V.Lytvyn with the 20th anniversary of independence of Ukraine, and suggested organizing joint events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries in 2012.

 

The Speaker of the House of Representatives appreciated the level of bilateral political dialogue, and called for further development of inter-parliamentary relations and cooperation in the international organizations. He invited the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to make an official visit to Japan as the head of the parliamentary delegation. He also informed that a deputy group of the Japanese Parliament is going to visit Ukraine shortly. 

 

Mr. Yokomichi also noted high level of organization of the events dedicated to the 40th anniversary since Kyiv became sister town of Kyoto.
