Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, attended the scientific conference "Ukrainian Parliamentarism: Problems of History and Modern Policy" organized by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine together with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory on the eve of the 145th birthday anniversary of Mykhailo Hrushevskyi.

"The figure of M. Hrushevskyi has been studied by foreign specialists for more than one century, but it is only recently that they reached understanding", V. Lytvyn stated.

According to the Head of the Parliament, it is remarkable that the memory of M. Hrushevkyi is being kept not only in Ukraine but also abroad: there are numerous exhibitions, his works are being published, streets and awards are named after him. "However, his deep wisdom and academic vision of solutions to the problems should not drown in declarations", the Chairman emphasized.

V. Lytvyn is convinced that "M. Hrushevskyi has yet to be analyzed as a historian and a state figure, since his genius covered different spheres of public activity. We do not know M. Hrushevskyi as archeologist and archaeography expert, theorist and practitioner of constitutionalism, feudalism and state building. Such topics as M. Hrushevskyi as a founder of national culture concept and organization of Ukrainian science, and M. Hrushevskyi as a linguist and theorist of literature, belletrist and fine art expert, ethnographer and philosopher should be researched."

In each of these spheres, according to V. Lytvyn, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi was if not a pioneer than a leading researcher and a professional. "It is not a modern interpretation. It is the opinion of his prominent contemporaries", the Head of the Parliament stressed.

"Although many works have such ‘loud´ names as M. Hrushevskyi founder of the Ukrainian nationhood, M. Hrushevskyi the most prominent Ukrainian historian, they usually retell well-known sentences and have no practical application and novelty", V. Lytvyn believes.

The Head of the Parliament stressed that the array of issues M. Hrushevskyi dealt with has yet to be appreciated by the education-research institutes. V. Lytvyn is convinced that this research forum will contribute to the strengthening of parliamentarism in Ukraine.

Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, other People´s Deputies of Ukraine, leading experts, and scientists took part in the conference.
