Mykola Tomenko: Ukraine should follow the Example of Georgia in commemorating the Great Ukrainians

Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, believes that Ukraine should follow the example of Georgia in commemorating the anniversary of birth of prominent Ukrainian poetess Lesia Ukrainka.

The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine made this statement during his working visit to Georgia.

The Deputy Chairman visited the museum of Lesia Ukrainka in the city of Surami and the school named after Lesia Ukrainka, and laid flowers to her monument. The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine presented the latest editions of the poetess´s works, and audio materials for studying Ukrainian culture, language and literature. The 140th anniversary of birth of the eminent poetess is celebrated this year. Lesia Ukrainka spent her last days in the Georgian city of Surami.

The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine admitted that it is a paradox that Ukrainian prominent figures are more commemorated in Georgia than in Ukraine. According to M.Tomenko, Ukraine should follow the example of Georgia in commemorating the great Ukrainians.

The Deputy Chairman reminded that he drafted the resolution on celebration of the 140th anniversary of birth of Lesia Ukrainka. "Notwithstanding this resolution, this date was celebrated only in Zhytomyr and Volyn regions, not countrywide," he stated. Moreover, the school named after Lesia Ukrainka announced 2011 year of Lesia Ukrainka in Georgia.
