Before the 20th
Session was adjourned on July 9, 2011, OSCE PA adopted the resolution "Nuclear
Safety and Environmental Protection" submitted by Ukraine.
The draft resolution was initiated by Oleh Bilorus, Head of the Standing Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and ratified by the majority of votes during the fierce debate with the representatives of the countries which support absolute prohibition of nuclear power engineering.
The Head of the Ukrainian Standing Delegation focused on the actions to strengthen technological and physical nuclear safety which should be primary tasks for the OSCE member states during any works connected with the use of nuclear power. He also declared that cooperation on the innovative methods of nuclear power use should become the most effective area in this sphere to support global operational safety.
O.Bilorus focused on the implementation of national and international strategies which provide for greening and safety of nuclear power engineering as top priorities.
The Head of the Ukrainian Standing Delegation also spoke at the general debates during the final plenary meeting.
O.Bilorus drew attention of the OSCE PA member states to the new threats facing global security and the tasks for OSCE as the international organization. "We need a reform of the OSCE, a new system of global security, and effective organization to liquidate frozen conflicts and tackle the pressing issues," O.Bilorus stressed.
The Head of the Ukrainian Standing Delegation stressed that the present-day global economic crisis is the biggest threat. "This crisis was caused by overconsumption of virtual money and unprecedented accumulation of debts. Being non-cyclic, the crisis has irreversible consequences. Global strategies are necessary to make co-development preventive," O.Bilorus stated.
Serhiy Shevchuk, member of the Ukrainian Standing Delegation in the OSCE PA, was elected Head of the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment.
