Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, calls on the Parliaments of Ukraine and Poland to adopt the Common Appeal concerning establishment of the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation of Ukrainians and Poles.

 

V.Lytvyn made the foregoing statement, meeting Henryk Litwin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to Ukraine.

 

The Parties discussed the draft appeal, which is being prepared by the specialized committees on foreign affairs and European integration of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. V.Lytvyn considers the draft appeal to be "well-made, mobilizing and binding." He has recently discussed this issue with Marshall of the Sejm Grzegorz Schetyna.

 

V.Lytvyn declared that Ukrainian Party was interested in the bilateral dialogue on the sensitive issues of history. He warned against using biased documents and giving political coloring to the historical past.  

 

At the beginning of the meeting, V.Lytvyn congratulated the Ambassador on the launch of his diplomatic mission in Ukraine. He hopes that joint efforts will foster Ukrainian-Polish relations. 

 

The Head of the Parliament highly appreciates the level of inter-parliamentary relations. "Our relations are on the rise," he stated, placing emphasis on the active dialogue between Ukraine and Poland in the political, economic, and humanitarian sectors.

 

V.Lytvyn thanked Poland for supporting European integration course of Ukraine, noting pro-active stand of the Polish Republic in the European institutions. 

 

In his turn, the Ambassador expressed his hopes that during Poland´s presidency over the European Union, the negotiations between Ukraine and the EU will be concluded, and the agreements on association and a free trade zone will be signed.
